Value Factors (VFs) are easier than you might think.
Even if you "hate math" you can determine the VF of a given Super Bowl
Ticket, without a computer and without anxiety.
How?
Just take the Value of the Ticket in it's most common color (this is
always, VF = 1). Now, for tickets from Super Bowl years where more than
one color exists, if the VF for a given color variation that you
have or want to buy or sell is above "1," just multiply the VF
of the "1" Ticket or stub in dollars by the VF of the less common
color's Value Factor (which will always be above "1") to get the
answer you need.
To
start, Keep It Simple: when
determining the dollar value by using the ticket's VF assume that: A) the
condition or PSA Grade of "Ticket X" must be the same as that
of "Ticket Y;" B) that both must be from the same Super Bowl year;
and that C) both must be either Fulls, or Stubs.
Value
Factors provide an "apples to apples" valuation,
but do not apply "in a simple and direct manner" if the relative
value of tickets from different years is desired (that's "apples to
oranges,") and is not where the primary importance of VF is found.
This can be done, but more on the advanced use of VFs another day.
Now check the price of "Ticket X" in that given grade, from that given
year. Let's say the price guide you
chose lists it at $100. OK, then with a VF = 1.2, the price of "Ticket Y"
(in the same grade as Ticket X) and from the same year, would be = $120.
If two colors from the same year and in the same condition are both
"VF = 1" then the price of the two -- based on scarcity of these equally
weighted Tickets, is the same -- "an even swap," you might say.
E-Z, right? In our example we just
take the VF of 1.2 (or whatever VF is listed for a given color), times the
price of the most common Ticket color -- remember: the list price
always equals "1," or put another way
the baseline VF of each year's most common color variety of a given
Ticket will always equal a VF of 1.
To use the VF to get the adjusted price of a LESS common color variation
(AKA the
Population Based Adjusted Relative Value
or, more simply put, the
Value Factor of the LESS
common color variety)
just "crank" the equation.
Yes, this simple formula works for Stubs and Fulls, so long as you are
talking about "apples and apples." In other words, the same Super Bowl
year's Tickets or Stubs, in the same grade. It also works, of course, if
neither ticket in question has a VF of 1. It even works with Super Bowl
tickets from different years, but these calculations will be explained in
Second Semester VF Calculus. Be sure to get the "basic idea" down first.

Just how big was
The Catch?
Big enough to be the
winning score in the
January 10,
1982
NFC
Championship
American football
game between the
Dallas Cowboys
and the
San Francisco 49ers.
But that’s just the beginning of the story…
In a game where the lead shifted
back and forth, the 49ers took over the ball trailing 27-21 and marched
down to the 6-yard line with 58 seconds left on the clock. When
Joe Montana
took the snap, the play, known as Sprint Right Option, was intended to
be a pass to wide receiver
Freddie Solomon.
Earlier in the game, Solomon scored a touchdown on
that exact play. However, the Cowboys covered Solomon perfectly.
Making matters worse, the pass rush of the Cowboys collapsed the 49ers
offensive line. Three Cowboys, defensive ends
chased a backpedalling Montana to the sideline and were certain to send
him out of bounds or make a sack. At the last moment, Montana
threw a very high pass to the back of the end zone.
49ers receiver
Dwight Clark
made a leaping grab from the back of the end zone for the winning
touchdown with 51 seconds left in the game.
The 49ers won 28-27 and went on to win
Super Bowl XVI
over the
Cincinnati Bengals.
Twenty years later, Sports Illustrated rated The Catch in the
top 25 sports moments of the 20th Century! Think about
it; of all the plays in all the games in Pro Football history, this play
still stands as THE Catch out of the thousands of exciting moments in our
collective memory.
This game turned the fortunes of both the 49ers and
the Cowboys for the next ten years. After being a losing team in the
1970s, San Francisco went on to win four
Super Bowls
in the 1980s, and made the playoffs eight out of the next 10 years.
Meanwhile, Dallas, a winning team in the 1970s, never
made it back to the Super Bowl in the 1980s, and suffered losing seasons in
the last part of that decade.
Perhaps a 100 tickets went unused for this
sold out Candlestick Park NFC Championship game.
Maybe 10 exist 25 years later.
We don't recall seeing any in the hobby in the last
decade. This ticket at $1500
represents value, true scarcity, and an indelible moment in Super Bowl
history. Our price is $495 high grade unslabbed, and $1195 PSA 9 MINT.
That makes it a Big Catch; don't you agree?
